How to Eat Right for Your Body

Figuring out how to eat right for your body isn't about picking a diet — it's about understanding how your body actually handles food, and how much of it you can process at once.Most long-term health problems are diagnosed at the point where they finally become obvious. But by then, the process behind them has usually been building quietly for years — sometimes decades.

That means the useful question isn't "have my results crossed the line yet?" It's "which way are they moving, and why?"

This article walks through the basics: how your body handles food, why the timing of what you eat matters as much as what you eat, how digestive problems turn into wider ones, and what's worth testing.


The direction matters more than the number

Test results come with a "normal range." That range tells you when a doctor is allowed to give a problem a name. It doesn't tell you when the problem started.

Blood sugar is the clearest example. HbA1c is a blood test that shows your average blood sugar over the past three months. At 6.5%, you get a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes.

But imagine someone whose results over four years look like this: 5.1, then 5.3, then 5.6, then 5.8. Every one of those is technically "normal." Nobody is worried. Yet that person is clearly heading somewhere, and the process driving it has been running the whole time.

Many practitioners aim for an HbA1c between 5.2 and 5.4. But more important than the number is the direction it's moving.


Two things follow from this:

Test your fasting insulin, not just your blood sugar. Insulin is the hormone that moves sugar out of your blood and into your cells. When cells stop responding to it properly, your body compensates by making more insulin. Blood sugar stays normal — because insulin is working overtime to keep it there. That can go on for years. If you only test blood sugar, you miss all of it. Fasting insulin catches it early.

One test tells you very little. Four tests over four years tell you almost everything. Keep your old results.

The same idea applies well beyond blood sugar. Heart disease and dementia both develop over decades before symptoms show. By the time there's a diagnosis, a lot of the physical damage — hardened arteries, scarring, protein build-up in the brain — is already done and hard to undo. Prevention has to start in your twenties and thirties, not your seventies.


Food gives you energy — but it also costs energy

We tend to think of food as fuel going in. It's also work to be done.

Roughly 10% of the energy you burn each day goes on digesting and processing what you've eaten. Protein takes the most work, fat the least. On top of that, your body is constantly breaking food down into its smallest parts and rebuilding those parts into new tissue — new muscle, new blood cells, new gut lining — and then clearing away the leftovers.

None of that is free. Processing food produces waste products and a certain amount of internal stress. After a large meal, especially one high in fast-releasing carbohydrate or fat, markers of inflammation and oxidative stress in the blood measurably rise for a few hours before settling.

Do that three times a day for thirty years, in a body that's already struggling, and it adds up.

The practical point: how much you eat, and how it's spread out, are health factors in their own right — not just what you eat. A body constantly being asked to process more than it comfortably can is a body with no spare capacity.


Different foods arrive at different speeds

Carbohydrate, protein and fat don't reach your bloodstream at the same time. Each has its own timeline: Carbohydrate- within about 2 hours, protein- about 2 to 4 hours, fat- about 4 to 6 hours.

This is why balanced meals work. A meal that's mostly one thing gives you a surge in one window and a gap afterwards. A meal with all three gives you a steady, overlapping supply — which is why you stay full longer and your energy doesn't crash.

It's also why the endless argument about low-carb versus low-fat versus high-protein misses the point. Those are labels. What actually matters is whether your eating pattern gives your body a steady supply or a cycle of flood and famine.


How to Eat Right for Your Body: Working Out What You Need

Most people have never been told how much protein they need, and general rules based on bodyweight don't work well for anyone whose build isn't average.

A better approach:

Start with a body composition test. This measures how much of you is muscle and how much is fat, plus your total body water. Bodyweight alone can't tell you this — two people who weigh the same can have very different amounts of muscle.

Base your protein on your muscle mass and how active you are, not on your total weight. Muscle is the tissue that needs protein. Fat doesn't.

Then build carbohydrate and fat around that. For reference: protein and carbohydrate each provide about 4 calories per gram, fat about 9.

Track body composition over time, not just the scales. Losing weight is not automatically good. If most of what you lost was muscle, that's a worse outcome than losing nothing at all.


Two things people commonly miss

Omega-3 and omega-6 fats. Your cells talk to each other using chemical messengers, and these fats are the raw material for a whole family of them. These messengers control local inflammation — including the signals that switch inflammation off again when it's no longer needed. If you don't get enough of these fats, or the balance between them is badly skewed, that communication suffers. Most people get plenty of omega-6 and not enough omega-3, so the balance is usually the issue rather than the total.

Sugars that aren't fuel. Not all sugars are burned for energy. Some specific ones get built into the outer surface of your cells, where they act like name badges — helping your immune system recognise which cells belong to you, and affecting how bacteria and viruses attach. This is a newer area of research rather than something with a clear supplement protocol, but it's a good reminder that carbohydrate does more than provide calories.


When the gut gets overloaded

Two simple facts explain a lot of digestive trouble.

Your digestive enzymes have a ceiling. Enzymes are what break food down. Your body makes a certain amount, and no more. Eat more than they can handle and the extra doesn't get digested faster — it just moves further down your gut undigested.

Enzymes only work in the right conditions. Each one needs a particular level of acidity to function. Your stomach is very acidic; your small intestine needs to be neutralised by a bicarbonate release from the pancreas before the next stage of digestion can work. If that step isn't happening well, everything downstream struggles.

Here's why that matters. Undigested food arriving in your small intestine becomes food for bacteria instead of for you. Those bacteria ferment it, producing gas, bloating and various by-products. That's the basis of SIBO — small intestinal bacterial overgrowth — where bacteria that belong further down the gut set up shop where they shouldn't be.

At the same time, your gut lining suffers. The cells lining your gut are held together by junctions that work like adjustable gates — they open and close to control what gets through. Those gates are not passive seals. They need energy to maintain, and they're sensitive to inflammation and to what's sitting in the gut.

When the lining is inflamed, poorly fed or under constant fermentation stress, those gates stop closing properly. Larger particles slip through into the bloodstream that shouldn't be there, and your immune system reacts to them. That's what "leaky gut" describes.

The chain looks like this:

Too much food, or poorly digested food → fermentation and bacterial imbalance → inflamed, stressed gut lining → gates stop working properly → things cross into the blood that shouldn't → immune system reacts throughout the body.

But eating too little causes problems too

None of the above is an argument for eating less and less. Under-eating creates its own damage, on a fairly predictable schedule:

  • First couple of hours: your liver releases stored sugar to keep blood sugar steady.

  • Two to four hours: those stores run down, and your body starts breaking down muscle to make sugar from it.

  • Four to six hours onward: fat gets used more heavily.

Keep that up long-term and you lose muscle, your thyroid slows down, your stress hormones rise and your metabolism drops.

This is why it's common to see people who've eaten very little for years turn up with high blood sugar. It sounds contradictory, but it isn't — insulin resistance and stress hormones can push blood sugar up regardless of how little you're eating.

The aim isn't more or less. It's enough — delivered at a pace your body can handle.


Your Body's Recycling System

We focus almost entirely on what goes in. What gets cleared out matters just as much.

Your cells have a built-in recycling process. It breaks down worn-out cell parts, damaged proteins and general debris, recovers the useful building blocks, and disposes of the rest. It's particularly important for clearing out damaged mitochondria — the parts of the cell that produce energy — because damaged ones leak stress-causing by-products if they're left in place.

Here's the useful part: this recycling process is switched off when food is constantly available, and switched on during gaps. Grazing all day keeps it suppressed. Exercise and periods without food switch it on.

That's an argument for real gaps between meals and a defined eating window — which is a different thing from eating less overall.

A body that recycles well needs less new material coming in to achieve the same result.


What's worth testing

The skill isn't in ordering tests — it's in reading them together as a picture rather than one at a time. A sensible starting panel:

Blood sugar and metabolism

  • Fasting glucose, fasting insulin, HbA1c

  • Cholesterol panel, paying particular attention to triglycerides relative to HDL

Iron

  • Ferritin, serum iron, iron-binding capacity — alongside an inflammation marker, because inflammation pushes ferritin up and can hide a genuine deficiency

Thyroid

  • TSH, free T4, free T3, plus thyroid antibodies

Stress hormones

  • Cortisol — from saliva across the day if you want to see the daily rhythm, from urine if you want total output, from blood for a single morning reading

General

  • Vitamin D, B12, folate, CRP, full blood count

Body composition, at the start and at regular intervals.

One note on thyroid antibodies: these rise when the immune system is reacting to thyroid tissue being damaged. Read that way, a rising antibody level isn't just a label — it's a signal that something is actively going on, which is a reason to track it over time rather than test once and forget it.


 It isn't only about food

The thread running through all of this is simple: your body has a limited capacity to process demands, and things go wrong when demand exceeds capacity.

Food is only one demand. Poor sleep, training harder than you're recovering from, long-term stress, alcohol, and hours of constant screen input all draw on the same reserves. And the non-food ones are often the real limiting factor — the ones nobody has looked at.

Someone eating a perfect diet on four hours of broken sleep does not have a nutrition problem.

Balance isn't a vague wellness word here. It's the observation that every system has a range where it works properly, that both too much and too little fall outside it, and that the job — long before anything gets a name — is to work out which end you're at and which way you're heading.


In Summary

Capacity is the theme. Too much food overwhelms digestion, too little breaks down muscle, constant eating stops the clearing-out, and a body already running on poor sleep has nothing left for the diet you're asking it to handle. Working this out on your own is hard, and not because the information is secret. The markers that matter most aren't the ones usually offered, and any single result means little until it's read alongside the others and followed over time..
